Passive Empathy Support

Tuned in Consulting has previously undertaken both commissioned work and research in the areas of vicarious trauma and vicarious resilience. This has resulted in publications and training programs for staff to support organisations keep their staff well.

One of the areas of emerging research is in relation to passive empathy. In the past, it has been assumed that those most impacted by trauma work are those who meet with those effected – clients, patients, customers, victim-survivors – and while there is definitely impact from this direct work, increasing research is showing that those who are exposed to traumatic material in more passive ways, in roles where they are exposed to stories that are distressing, are impacted in quite different ways and also need significant support and access to supervision and debriefing.
Combining the vicarious trauma and work health safety research, with current neuroscience findings, Tuned in consulting has been working in the innovative new area with agencies, professionals and individuals exposed to passive trauma, using a range of methods to provide understanding of the impact, and support for the ongoing effects, personally and professionally.

This has included work with:
– Critical Incident Review Teams
– Child Death Review Teams
– NSW Health, NSW Police and NSW Ambulance
– Coroner’s Teams
– Patient Safety Review Teams
